Breadsticks Recipe

Breadsticks are a type of Italian bread that are made with a soft, chewy dough and are often served as a side dish or an appetizer. They are easy to make and can be customized to suit your taste preferences. This recipe is for classic breadsticks, but you can add herbs, spices, or cheese to the dough to give them more flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it is foamy.
  2. Add the flour, salt, olive oil, and egg to the bowl and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin stick shape and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the breadsticks with a little beaten egg or milk and sprinkle them with your choice of herbs or spices, if desired.
  6. Bake the breadsticks for 10-12 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Serve the breadsticks warm, with your choice of dipping sauces or as part of a larger meal. They can also be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Tips:

  • To add flavor to the breadsticks, you can mix herbs, spices, or cheese into the dough before shaping it. Some popular options include garlic, Parmesan cheese, basil, oregano, or chili flakes.
