Nihari is a traditional Pakistani dish made with slow-cooked beef and a blend of aromatic spices. It is typically served with naan bread or rice.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and ginger and cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the cinnamon stick, bay leaves, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, garam masala, chili powder, turmeric, and salt and cook for 1 minute more.
  3. Add the beef and cook until it is browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 2-3 hours or until the beef is tender.
  5. Stir in the lemon juice and serve hot with naan bread or rice.

Tips:

  • For a thicker nihari, mix together 1 tbsp cornstarch and 2 tbsp water and add it to the pot during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
  • For a spicier nihari, add an extra teaspoon of chili powder or serve with some chili flakes on top.
  • Nihari is traditionally served with naan bread or rice, but it is also delicious served over mashed potatoes or with a side of crusty bread.
This comforting and flavorful Nihari Beef Pakistani main meal is sure to be a hit with the whole family
