Calzones

Calzones Recipe

Calzones are a type of Italian turnover that are filled with a variety of savory ingredients and baked until crispy and golden. They are similar to pizza, but they are folded over and sealed, making them a portable and convenient snack or meal. This recipe is for a classic calzone, but you can customize the filling with your favorite ingredients or add herbs, spices, or sauces to give the calzones more flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1 cup diced cooked chicken or ham
  • 1 cup diced cooked vegetables (such as bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, or zucchini)
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces.
  3. In the center of each dough piece, place a spoonful of marinara sauce, a handful of diced chicken or ham, a handful of diced vegetables, and a sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Season the filling with salt and pepper, to taste.
  4. Fold the dough over the filling, pressing the edges together to seal the calzones. Use a fork to crimp the edges and poke a few holes in the top of each calzone to allow steam to escape.
  5. Brush the calzones with the beaten egg and sprinkle them with additional Parmesan cheese. Place the calzones on a baking sheet and bake them for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
  6. Serve the calzones hot, with additional marinara sauce or any other desired toppings.

Tips:

  • To add flavor to the calzones, you can mix herbs, spices, or sauces into the filling before sealing the dough. Some popular options include chopped fresh basil, oregano, or parsley, or a pinch of red pepper flakes or paprika.
  • You can also top the calzones with a variety of garnishes, such as diced tomatoes, olives, or sliced jalapeños, or a drizzle of ranch dressing or buffalo sauce.
  • If you want to make the calzones in advance, you can prepare the filling and seal the dough, then refrigerate the calzones until you are ready to bake them. Just be sure to let the calzones come to room temperature before baking them, or they may take longer to cook.
  • For a crispy crust, you can brush the calzones with olive oil or melted butter before baking them. This will help the crust to brown and become crispy.
  • To make the calzones more visually appealing, you can sprinkle the tops with additional cheese or herbs before baking them, or you can drizzle them with a glaze made from melted butter and garlic or Italian herbs.
